Rant: Trying to figure out how to make the “Right Choice” causes more trouble than it’s worth.

This goes out to all those who get paralyzed, overthink, do endless research, and build up anxiety when it comes to decision time.

Whether it be looking for the right place to have dinner with friends, to if you should pivot a career, I think everybody wants to make the “Right Choice”.

Here I am saying that it’s not possible to do so. It’s very possible to make the “best possible choice using the current experience and judgement that you have”, but not possible to make the “Right Choice”.

The reason lies within each of those words.

“Choice” is a decision that is MADE: I emphasize this because choices (decisions) are made in real time. It’s not possible to make a choice in the past, unless time travel is a thing already. You can plan to make a decision in the future, but you haven’t actually made it, nor do you get the reap the rewards and consequences of the choice yet.

“Right” is a reflection on the “Choice” that can only be revealed AFTER the choice was made. Only after you’ve experienced the rewards and consequences of the choice. Hence, there is no way to combine the two at the moment you are trying to hammer down your Choice.

On top of all that, there are plenty of decisions that feel “Right”, but later down the road, you figure out, the decision didn’t actually serve you. (Probably shouldn’t have eaten that day old sushi, even if it tasted fine). Sometimes, the decision doesn’t feel right at the time, but later down the road, you are vindicated. (Breaking up with that toxic SO that you were infatuated with).

With every choice made, you always get to reap the experience, and you always get to use that experience towards your next choice. If you’re busy beating yourself trying to figure out the “Right Choice”, you don’t get the progress or the experience and you end up stuck in limbo.

Let me know if this resonates with you!
